The Romance Anonimo (Anonymous Romance) is a simple familiar and well-loved work that is in one version or another in the repertoire of virtually every classical Guitarist. As with many seemingly simple works a good level of technical ability and musicianship is required to create a performance worthy of the music.The piece is known by many names Spanish Romance Romance de Espana Romance of the Guitar and Study in E by Rubira. Similarly the authorship is unsettled though Miguel Llobet is one of the names to which the piece is credited. The earliest known recording was a wax cylinder made sometime around 1900. Whoever wrote Romance Anonimo it is a lovely piece beloved of audiences and Guitarists alike.

The Welsh traditional song Suo G n is here arranged for SATB Chorus and Organ Accompaniment by Stephen Cleobury. Written by an anonymous composer in Welsh it literally means 'Lullaby'. This beautiful arrangement is sure to be a favourite with audiences and choirs alike. It features lyrics in both English and Welsh. This traditional Welsh song has been a favourite within the repertoire for many years after having been first documented by folklorist Robert Bryan. With versions sung by Charlotte Church Katherine Jenkins and the Choir of King's College Cambridge  Suo G n is one of the most recognisable andwell-loved tunes in the Welsh and English repertoire. This new arrangement by Stephen Cleobury will be a welcome addition to any choir's performance with the combination of such a new take on an established classic with simple beautiful music.

(Four Cities)-Faz'l Say?s ?Four Cities? Sonata can be considered as a journey through four cities of Anatolia. This work has taken its inspiration from Faz'l Say?s memories and events of his life. Bodrum is well known as a city greatly frequented by tourists which sets it apart from the other three locations. These four very different cities with their individual cultures have been selected from the nearly 2000-km wide expanse of Anatolia. SivasSivas is a conservative city located in Eastern Anatolia which is known for its large Alevi population. As¸'k Veysel is an Alevi Ozan (poet) and Faz'l Say has been inspired by his song ?Saz'm? (my saz/myinstrument) in the first part of this work. The movement is concluded on a melancholy tone in imitation of this ethnic instrument. HopaA traditional wedding provided Faz'l Say with his inspiration for this second movement which embraces Eastern Black Sea culture. Horon is a very fast folk dance in 7/16 time which is played on the kemence a typical instrument of the Eastern Black Sea region. The music also touches on Caucasian Georgian and Laz dances anonymous songs ?Laz women? and ?Cilveloy nanayda? (a Turkish song). AnkaraAnkara was declared the capital city of Turkey by Atatürk in 1923. This city with its population of four million was where the composer was born and also spent his childhood. ?Ankara?n'n Tas¸'na Bak? a rebellious song dating back to the First World War can be discerned in the mournful middle section. The movement with its atmosphere of tragedy evokes the republican spirit and the ambience of former times. BodrumBodrum is universally known as the Saint-Tropez of Turkey. A famous street in the city is fringed with countless bars and pubs from which a cacophony of different music can be heard ranging from jazz pop and rock to folk songs. The Happy Wanderer?s five cheery verses and unforgettable Val-de-ri val-de-ra refrain have made it a perennial Choral standard and an audience favourite reappearing as a soundtrack in films and shows as varied as ?The Simpsons? and Schindler?s List.The Happy Wanderer sounds so typical of German folk music that many people assume it is a traditional song by the famous composer ?Anonymous?. However the song was written shortly after World War II by Friedrich-Wilhelm Möller. His sister conducted a children?s choir made up of war orphans the Obernkirchen Children?s Choir who sang it to win the Llangollen InternationalMusical Eisteddfodd in 1953. The Happy Wanderer waspropelled into the UK singles chart and the choir into an international performing career.

Andrew Cusworth's Adam Lay Ibounden is a work for Unaccompanied SAB Choir a setting of an anonymous 15th century English text. A performance lasts around 1 and a half minutes. This short setting of a well-known text is only 34 bars long but is nevertheless an attractive piece for choirs of sopranos altos and baritones. Each voice is allocated the tune which provides an effective setting appropriate to sing after the traditional first lesson at a service of Nine Lessons and Carols. - Sunday by Sunday

Music for SATB chorus occupies an important place in Rhian Samuel's catalogue of works from the early carols written in the USA 'Jolly Wat the Shepherd' of 1970 and 'So Long Ago' (1st Prize Greenwich Festival 1979) to her most recent anthems for the Choir of New College Oxford. In her songs vocal chamber music and choral compositions she has explored an impressive range of poetry from anonymous 14th-century Welsh texts and traditional Japanese verse to Emily Dickinson Samuel Beckett and contemporary poets including Anne Stevenson. Samuel's three 'Jacobean Lyrics' of 1979 included a simple canonic account of George Herbert's 'I got me flowers'. Thisnew a cappella setting returns to the poet's sublime devotional verse reflecting the dialogue structure of 'Love Bade Me Welcome' through expressive contrasts of material and vocal ensemble.

Berkeley provided a folk-like setting in this song for Sophie Wyss (1897-1983) the Swiss sopranoliving in England who gave important premieres of Britten.Wyss and Berkeley gave the first performance in a BBC broadcast on 13 July 1947.He had already dedicated ‘Tant que mes yeux’ Op. 14 No.2/6 to her and withhimshe gave the first performance of that song as well as ‘Ode du premier jour de mai’ Op. 14 No.2/7 at the Fyvie Hall London on 20 February 1945. Those two songswere published performed and recorded but ‘The LowLands of Holland’ has beenneglected. It comes as close as Berkeley ever got to the English folk song tradition.This edition is based on the copyist’s score at the British Library and includes thecorrections thecomposer provided with it.
